Newsletter #2

22.05.2024

Dear contributors and supporters,

We would like to share with you our current news, following our recent effort to provide clean water for drinking, cooking and washing, for the displaced persons residing in Mesk and Layan, Zomi Shelter, and neighboring IDP camps.

While we move forward with our plan to purchase a desalination unit, required for filtering the well-water in the area, and in the face of a serious water-crisis in the surrounding camps, we've decided to prioritize providing drinking and washing water to 2000 families. Based on current calculations, 1000 families require approximately 20m3 clean water per day, with a daily cost of approximately 1000€.

For further reading about the water crisis in Gaza, we’ve created a short document

With the generous support of more than 360 donors worldwide, and thanks to our team and volunteers on the ground, we have been able to deliver clean water in the past weeks to the hundreds of families residing in Zomi Shelter and Mesk and Layan. When water was donated, we funded its transportation to the camps; when water deliveries stopped last week due to lack of Diesel fuel, we purchased and delivered water. In addition, we’ve purchased water tanks for drinking-water, since these are very costly at the moment, whereas “regular” plastic tanks contain chemicals and acids that can render the water undrinkable.

We have also managed to arrange for donations of canned food as well as a daily cooked meal in both Zomi and Mesk and Layan. This meal consists mostly of rice, beans and lentils, as there are currently no vegetables, meat, or fruit, and organizations that provide food are facing great difficulties with delivery and getting trucks into Gaza.

Additionally, our team has coordinated educational and leisure activities for children and youth in Mesk and Layan and in Zomi, as well as other services such as food, diapers, and sanitary kits, for which we also covered delivery costs. They have been working closely with Oxfam, ANERA, Maan, and the Ministry of social affairs, which have made generous donations to both camps.

How can you help?

We are continuing to fundraise for our ongoing work, and for the acquisition and installation of a water desalination unit and two 5000-liter tanks to store water, as well as the upgrading of Zomi Shelter’s energy system with additional solar panels. This will allow us to provide clean water to approximately 3000 people, with an estimated cost of 15,000€.
