Shelter and Protection
With mass displacement continuing across Gaza, thousands of families are in urgent need of safe, dignified shelter.
Clean Shelter is actively working to address this crisis by taking part in the construction of IDP camps, rehabilitating schools, and providing essential shelter materials to those most affected.
IDP Camps in Al-Mawasi
Clean Shelter played a key role in the construction of two internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Al-Mawasi, offering shelter, sanitation, clean drinking water, and community spaces to more than 1,000 families. These camps provide not only a place to sleep but also essential services to support displaced families as they rebuild their lives.
Mesk and Layan IDP Camp
Since its establishment in February 2024, Clean Shelter has been actively supporting Mesk and Layan Camp, originally created to house families forcibly displaced a second time from Nasser Hospital and UNRWA shelters. When heavy rains left many women and children without refuge, the camp rapidly expanded, with multiple families sharing a single tent until additional shelters could be arranged.
The camp prioritizes IDPs with disabilities, children, and female-headed households, with residents coming from across the Gaza Strip—many having tragically lost their entire families. In a symbol of resilience, the camp was named Mesk and Layan after the first two baby girls born there in February 2024.
A Clean Shelter team member manages the camp daily, ensuring essential services such as sanitation, shelter, and clean water are maintained for hundreds of displaced families.
Zomi Shelter Centre
In April 2024, with the support of over 250 donors worldwide, we completed the construction of the Zomi Shelter Centre in Al-Mawasi (Khan Younis). The camp was named in tribute to Lalzawmi (Zomi) Frankcom, a World Central Kitchen aid worker who, along with six colleagues, was killed in Gaza on April 1st by an Israeli military airstrike.
This camp provides shelter to 100 families, primarily women, children, and individuals with disabilities. Clean Shelter facilities include:
16 toilets and 8 showers
A medical aid station
A designated structure serving as a school for children
A community space and kitchen, constructed in July 2024 and named after Vivian Silver
Expanding Shelter Support
Beyond camp construction, Clean Shelter has been working to improve shelter conditions across Gaza by:
Providing hundreds of tent covers to protect displaced families from extreme weather.
Rehabilitating 13 schools, including those hosting displaced persons, ensuring 6,000 students have insulated, safe classrooms where they can continue their education.
Supporting the establishment of new IDP camps in the north and the south of the Gaza strip, expanding our ability to provide safe shelter for those in urgent need.
We have also been actively supporting multiple IDP camps in Al-Mawasi and Deir al-Balah, such as Elwafa Orphans Village, Ehssan Camp, Jood Camp, Baraka Camp, and Hend Rajab Camp, among others.
As displacement continues, Clean Shelter remains committed to building, maintaining, and improving shelter solutions for Gaza’s most vulnerable.
